A Good Year: Class of 2022
There is often a misconception that playing on the “top” team is your only chance to be successful, especially when college soccer is part of the conversation.
At New England Surf, our Boys Program has proven that myth wrong over the past few months.
It was clear from the start that our U18/U19 age group was going to be competitive, but even we underestimated just how successful they would be on the pitch. Our 2004 State Grey boys enter the 2021/2022 season as the MYSA State Cup champions and USYS National semifinalists, with a total of eleven players committed to play college soccer in the Fall. In addition to that, our 2003/04 State Blue boys start off the season as MYSA State Cup finalists with eight players currently committed to play NCAA ball next Fall. What is more impressive, however, is that we currently have 22 college bound players across our four teams in that our U18-U19 age group.
Jaheim Perez & Tony Aharonian are two standout players from our 2003/04 State Navy squad, both having been with us since NE Surf’s inception.
Many would think that being placed on a club’s third team would indicate a lower level of competition and therefore, a lesser chance of being identified by college coaches. On the contrary, our 03/04 Navy squad is able to compete in the USYS National League and play against the same high-level competition as our Grey and Blue teams. “I am extremely grateful for the opportunities that Surf has given me over the last year and a half. Being able to play in State Cup and compete against some of the top teams in the State helped me get exposure, and because of that I am proud to say that I will be playing college soccer in the Fall,” said Perez. Both entering their second season with the club, Jaheim and Tony are officially committed to pursue their athletic and academic careers at UMass Boston and Framingham State University, respectively. Congratulations to both of them on their achievement, and we look forward to seeing several more Navy players commit in the coming weeks.
Tyler McInerney is the starting goalkeeper for our 2003/04 State Sky team, who missed out on the NECSL League Title last year on penalty kicks.
After following up with a strong season with Weymouth High School, we are proud to announce that Tyler has committed to American International College where he will be playing Division II soccer! “It has always been a dream of mine to play college soccer. I spent my whole life playing this game, so to see it pay off at this level really is something special. Thank you to my coach, and the entire club for helping me make this happen,” stated Tyler.
It is rare that clubs in this region have four teams in one age group to begin with, let alone four teams with collegiate caliber players.
Boys DOC, Jake Beverlin, said “I am proud of the work we have done with our high school boys. The ultimate goal for our older teams is not only to win games, but help these kids prolong their soccer careers at the collegiate level. Having over 20 kids already committed is great, and we look forward to announcing many more in the coming months.”
