NEFC Friendly Series Boys Recap
This past weekend, our boys teams took part in a series of friendlies, hosted by NEFC. After the Surf Challenge Event, our teams were eager to continue their hot streak in order to get ready for the Spring season. Our four featured teams (04 Blue, 05 Sky, 06 Navy, 08 Sky) all had glimpses of brilliance over the weekend, with three of the four teams finishing the series with a winning record.
Our 04 Blue squad was looking to build off of their promising performance at our Surf Challenge Event. Their first match saw them face a strong Bolts side on a windy Friday night in Lynnfield. The boys started off flying, creating plenty of chances in the final third and winning the ball back quickly when forced to defend. Our boys in blue could only capitalize twice, however, keeping the game close until the final whistle, where they ultimately came away with a 2-1 victory to start the weekend. The 04 Blue boys looked to continue their winning ways against a very physical Western United side. Once again, the boys started off on the front foot and found themselves leading 2-0 at halftime. The second half told a different story, however, with Western capitalizing on three opportunities, ending the game in a disappointing 3-2 loss for our Surf squad. After a tough loss, the boys were determined to finish the series with a win. They did just that against a very well organized Gallway side, where Surf were dominating from the start. We could only capitalize once, however, ultimately ending the weekend with a comfortable 1-0 win. “Overall it was a very positive weekend for the boys. They continued to gel together as a team and played some really attractive football in the process. I am especially proud of how they bounced back after a tough loss on Saturday night”, said Coach Paul.
Our 05 State Sky boys took on a very strong Bolts side in their opener. Our boys in blue got off to a strong start, displaying intensity and organization against a higher ranked opponent. They were successful in closing them down and were able to create several chances of their own, with one of them leading to the game’s opening goal. Our boys continued to make life difficult for the opponent, finding a lot of success pressing in different areas of the field. In the final minute, however, Bolts were able to sneak one by our Sky boys, ultimately ending in a 1-1 draw. Unfortunately, due to a COVID case on another team, the boys were shut down for the rest of the weekend and were only able to compete in one game.
The 06 Navy boys were looking to continue their hot streak after a string of successful performances during the Surf Challenge Event. They picked up right where they left off in their opening game against South Shore Select. Our boys were flying from the start, dominating possession and looking very dangerous in the final third. They were also able control the opponent out of possession, forcing them to one side of the field and effectively pressing them to win the ball back. Their first game ultimately ended in a 3-1 win, getting our boys in blue off to a great start for the weekend. The second game told a slightly different story, however, with some costly errors at the back gave the 06 Navy squad their one and only loss of the series. The boys were determined to finish off the weekend on a positive note, and they did just that. Much like their first game, Surf dominated in all phases of the game and did not let up for a minute. They continued to move the ball with speed and purpose, looking dangerous on the flanks and through the middle. Our 06 Navy boys were once again able to put 3 past Juventus, ultimately resulting in a 3-1 win to close out another winning weekend. “I am really pleased with how we played, especially in our last game following a tough loss. We moved the ball well and played some really attractive football. I think everyone is really looking forward to the season”, said Coach Nathan.
Our 2008 Sky team kicked off the weekend with a matchup against a very strong Bolts side. The game was very open from the start, with both teams having their fair share of chances. Our Surf boys defended well, staying compact and forcing the opponent to make mistakes, while simultaneously able to create plenty of dangerous moments in the final third. After a back and forth battle filled with intensity and passion, our boys in blue had to settle for a 2-2 draw. The 08 Sky squad were keen to get their first win of the weekend against the hosts, NEFC in their second matchup. After another hard fought battle, our boys were able to come away with a convincing 2-0 win. Surf was rolling after that, finishing up their series of friendlies with a dominant performance against Juventus, ultimately ending in a 5-1 win for our 2008 Sky team.
Congratulations to all New England Surf teams that competed over this past weekend!
