NEFC Friendly Series Girls Recap
This past weekend, our girls teams took part in a series of friendlies, hosted by NEFC. After the Surf Challenge Event, our teams were eager to continue their hot streak in order to get ready for the Spring season. Our four featured teams (08 Navy, 07 Sky, 06 Navy, 2010 MB) all had glimpses of brilliance over the weekend, with two of the four teams finishing the series with a winning record.
Our 2010 MB squad was looking to build off of their stellar performances last weekend, and continue to show promising signs of attacking football. They kicked off their series of friendlies with a comfortable 3-0 win, showing a great amount of energy, determination and teamwork, which remained consistent leading up to their final game. Although they maintained that level of competitiveness, they fell short of a perfect weekend after a close 2-1 loss to wrap up their series.
The 08 Navy girls took on South Shore Select in their opener, where they saw themselves take control of the game comfortably from the start. They moved the ball well and were able to create chances against an aggressive opponent, but were only able to capitalize on one of those opportunities. That lone goal, however, was enough to secure three points for our girls in blue and finish their weekend opener with a win. Their second game saw them face a very strong NEFC side, who were able to put two goals past our girls, both being off set pieces. Our Navy girls fought hard and displayed some promising signs of attacking football, but were unable to get themselves back in the game, ultimately being handed their first loss of the series. Their final matchup saw them take on BEST NPL, where they once again took control of the game from the opening whistle, and were dominant on both sides of the ball throughout the match. The game ultimately ended in a comfortable 6-0 win, with our girls in blue finishing off the series in style.
Our 07 Girls sky team started off their series with a tough matchup vs NEFC DPL. They started on the back foot, struggling to complete passes and break into the final third. They defended very well, but seemed to have an overall lethargic first half. That all changed at the start of the second when they got the equalizing goal through a stunning left-footed strike. That seemed to shift the momentum in favor of our Sky girls, who were able to stretch the opponent much more effectively and become more dangerous in the final third. This pressure ultimately led to a 2-1 victory for our girls in blue. Their second game vs SFC was very similar to their opener, with the girls struggling to find intensity in the opening minutes. The girls found their footing towards the end of the first half, when they were able to effectively break into the final third on multiple occasions, ultimately ending in another win for Surf. Our 07 Sky girls ended the weekend with a 2-1 record, showing a very consist and promising display of soccer throughout the whole weekend.
Our 06 Navy squad took this weekend to work on adapting to different systems of play, and saw it as an opportunity to continue to develop leading up to their upcoming season in the DPL. Their results didn’t necessarily reflect their performances in an accurate light, losing their first two games to some very strong opponents. Their final match of the weekend finally went their way, where they won a very hard fought battle against a physical Seacoast side, ultimately ending in a 1-0 victory. “The group is really starting to gel and come together, and I think the hard work they have put in over the winter and early Spring is starting to pay off. We’re excited for another hard week of practice before our DPL games this weekend”, said Coach Tim Mason.
Congratulations to all New England Surf teams that competed over this past weekend!
